Things don’t always go as planned. That’s part of the fun, right? On the X6, there were three things that I couldn’t look the other way on.
On the deck, we got a bubble on the rail that opened up when I started sanding. On the bottom, we got a bald spot. I’m positive I didn’t miss a spot and think this fish eyed on me after I left the board to cure. This is why you don’t touch the board with bare skin until after the hot coat! The oil from your skin can cause this to happen.
The big one was the tail. I was a little careless with my tape dam and it collapsed in on itself. I had hoped I’d be able to sand it down but it was too far into the board. Oh well, time to fix it up.
The deck issue was small so I started with that one. Basically, it’s a minor ding repair. In the picture above, you can see that I used a hole punch in a piece of masking tape to tape it off. I then mixed up a very small amount of epoxy thickened with micro-balloons and used that to fill the bubble.
After this set enough to not ooze out, I flipped the board over to redo the tail. I created a new tape dam but this time I used a smaller stiffer tape and added cleats in it for extra rigidity. I was only trying to fill in the gap so it didn’t take much epoxy. On this side, I did not add micro-balloons since I wanted it to blend with the epoxy from the hot coat.
The final result gave me plenty to work with. This also filled in the fish eye since that was on the tail as well.
On both sides, I had plenty of extra epoxy so I filled in a few other min spots that I would have normally not worried about.
